Oh Deer!! My car accident!

Last night at around 8:45 pm I got in my car and was headed over to pick up one of my daughters from a friend's house.  About a block from my house I was going around 45 when from the other direction a car was going around the same speed.  Right when we reached each other I felt a HUGE crash and wondered what had happened since neither of us had veered into the other lane.  Then I thought that maybe their door had opened and I either hit it or something that came from the car.  I pulled the car over and noticed that the other car was pulled over the other direction down the road.  My driver's side door would not open so I had to climb over to get out.  The people in the other car came over to see if I was okay.  I asked them what had happened and they said.  "You didn't see it?  There was a HUGE deer that hit our car and then bounced off and crashed into yours.  It must have ran across right as we were facing each other.  The deer was nowhere to be found but it left some of it's fur on my front end.  What a very scary night.  I feel so blessed and thankful that the Lord preserved my life.  It could have been so much worse.  The deer could have gone in front of me and caused me to drive into a pole, etc. etc.  I can't think about that, I'm just happy that we are all okay.

Here are pics of my car.  I now am in a rental.  We will see what the damages are and if the insurance company totals my car or plans to repair it.  It looks like a lot of damage.

  6. I learned something from my last accident. They may total your car because the damage is on the left side...apparently they put important car stuff on the left front because statistically people damage that side of their car, forcing insurance companies to total the car.

    Glad you're ok!

  9. Glad you are okay. The deer are a real headache when its dark, trust me I live in deer haven. I have only hit one, and he didnt hurt the truck thank heavens. I would of had to explain to hubby why his truck was messed up. He also had an interesting experience with a deer one time. He stopped along the road, got out of the truck, and when he got back in he noticed a deer off the road to the left of him watching him. He started the truck to leave, when he pulls out, the deer runs right into the side of his truck. Talk about a mad man...oh my! I found it humorous, (I said the deer was on a suicide mission and hubby helped him accomplish that) but hubby on the other hand saw nothing funny about it.

  36. So glad you are ok Robyn! It is scary at night when you feel the car shake but never see anything. Happened to me a couple of years ago. The deer ran right into my door as I was driving. We are in western PA and deer are everywhere this time of year. I have actually started to "look" for them at places where they cross the road alot. Just remember cars can be fixed, though it is an inconvenience.

  38. Glad you are ok. Remember....Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Always hit it head on. It is safer than losing control and rolling over, going into oncoming traffic or hitting a solid object such as a light pole. I taught defensive driving for years and this is the number one thing people forget when they see a deer. Hope you never have to go through this again, but it you do you will know what to do. I unfortunately can say from experience....it works. PS. WHere there is one deer, there are usually others. Beware.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So glad you are okay! FYI...you shouldn't swerve to miss the animal for insurance purposes. Sad, I know, but I bet that people say they went off into the ditch or hit a pole swerving to miss an animal just as an excuse for poor driving. My friend hit a deer and her insurance told her that it wouldn't have been covered if she didn't have proof. And, WOW! That is one tough deer to survive hitting not only one, but TWO cars :o)

  40. I'm glad you are OK. We have had quite a few deer strikes this season. One even ran into a motorcycle and knocked the rider clear across the road and totalled the bike.

  41. I am so glad that you and the other people involved in the accident are ok. It can be a very scary thing getting into an accident. Deer in Maryland are in abudance and this time of year it can be scary driving at night. I am glad you are fine....although it looks like your car took it on the chin. :)

    Take care

  42. Oh jeez, hope you're not too shaky still... But the deer has probably gone into the wood to die if it's been hurt enough to leave fur. At least no one was hurt. Take care!

  45. Oh thank goodness you are ok! I used to worry about hitting deer every time we drove from Utah to California to visit family. You see them all over the side of the highway. Now that we are living in California (though I wish desperately that we were back in Utah) we don't have to worry about that. Hopefully the insurance company will work quickly and you will be back to normal soon!

  48. So glad you are ok I am so sorry I remember when I hit one with my car and it works you up it may be done for good because of the inside could be totally messed up. Their in the beginning of the year my car was wrecked 3 times from Jan to March, in March they should have totaled it however I cried to the insurance guy that I needed a car, no job no car, no car no job is what I told him now I wish I would have left it go I didn't wreck it any of the 3 times my son could have been killed in the last one so lucky I have him now sorry to ramble on

I hope you are not sore

  49. Robyn, I live in the Moore area and was traveling to Norman on the back roads and a 100 lb doe jumped out into the road.....had I not been singing and driving 40 in a 50...I would have hit her...funny thing...she just stood there ...like hey....hit me girl! ...turned tail and jumped from the wooded area she came from. I am so grateful you are okay! They just aired this past week of the deer mating season and how many accidents they are causing....so grateful you and the other driver are okay :)

  61. wow! I'm so glad you're ok! Not to take away from the importance & gratitude for your safety, so please don't misunderstand me, but since no one else has mentioned the deer, I will. I pray that it is either uninjured or it has passed on mercifully. Each deer is a member of a family, just like we are. They are just trying to survive in this ever-changing world, just like we are. Our habitat is increasing while their's is decreasing. I'm not saying a deer's life is more valuable than a human's by any means, but after reading 60+ posts I thought the deer deserved at least one mention where it could be seen as a victim with a soul & not just a nuisance....

    ReplyDelete
  62. Glad to hear that your are okay. That is so scary. I asked my son about your car, he does auto body repair work. Not sure about the total, but he thinks if there is enough value in the car probably not, it is fixable

  63. So scary! I hit a deer last week on my way to school and had damage on the left side of the car too. It was a horrible experience!

    ReplyDelete
  64. So happy you are OK. Make sure the insurance company sees the deer fur. They sometimes don't believe it really is a deer. When my husband got hit by a deer going to work, that's what they told him. See there was a huge hunk of deer fur left on the car & they had to believe it was a deer. They paid! We were pretty glad since I do believe the deer had no insurance.

    ReplyDelete
  65. So glad to hear you are OK!!! We have a deer problem here, my husband had a few run out in front of my car a few years ago and ended up hitting one of them as he swerved out of the way but insurance wouldn't cover it b/c they said he didn't hit it, if he hit the deer and didn't swerve they would have covered it? Uhm, no thanks, would rather my hubby be safe the deer would have gone right through the windshield. Then two ran out in front of my car right around the corner from our house a few weeks ago, scared me,t totally unexpected, but luckily no one else was on the road so I stopped my car completely as they ran back across the road again making up there mind where they wanted to go :-(

So sorry about your car, glad you and the other people were okay, that must have been scary :-(

  66. Glad everyone is OK. The deer's injuries were likely to be fatal even if it was able to get away. Actually, 45 MPH is too fast to be driving during the rut when deer are distracted during mating season. Hunting season will be coming up shortly and things get even crazier. So slow down until things settle down. Many accidents with deer can be prevented if we stay alert and look from side to side of the road when driving. Often, deer will actually stop at the side of the road before they cross. If you are going slow enough, you will be able to stop in time. Take Care.

For me, I didn't know that the deer was hit by the person driving opposite of me until I showed up at the body shop and learned the other driver had her car there with the exact same story as me. The deer landed on my windshield and went under my van. Horrible experience. Like you, I thanked God for protecting me. God Bless!
