If I Listen with my Heart (Churchy)

Happy Sunday Everyone!

Our church times have changed this year so we do not start until 12:30 instead of 9:00 am.  We rotate every year.  It is nice for the change and the little extra sleep.  :)  This post is going to be a bit churchy but that is who I am.  In my church I have a calling (responsibility) of teaching new songs to the children every Sunday.  This is the beginning of a new year so I will have 8 songs to teach them before the end of the year.  January's song is one that is new to everyone in our church worldwide.  It is called If I Listen with my Heart.  Such a wonderful song.  I wanted to share the first verse and then share what I am going to do to help teach this to the children (ages 3-11).

If I had been a little child
When Jesus lived on earth
I would have liked to walk with Him
And listen to His words,

But as I search the scriptures
I can hear His words of peace,
And if I listen with my heart
I hear the Savior's voice.

Click HERE to listen to the entire song with words and music.  It is quite beautiful with a sweet meaning to it.

I cut out 2 1/2 inch hearts on my Cricut and I am going to hand a heart out to each child.  I am then going to ask them to write down what they think the Savior would tell them, if they listened with their hearts.  For example, the Savior would tell me to be kind or patient if I listened with my heart.  He would also tell me to not worry about things that were not important in the eternal perspective of things.  :)

For the beginning activity I am going to have a child come up to the front of the room and I am going to have them tell me a story.  As soon as they start speaking I am going to cover my ears.  When they stop I am going to tell them to go ahead because I am still listening.  I will then ask the children if they think I can really hear with my hands over my ears.  It will be a great way to teach the children that when we fully listen to someone with our hearts, we give them our full attention, eye contact, and love.  Just like when we are trying to listen to the Savior.  If we have so many distractions going on in our lives like loud music, TV, etc. , how can we hear what He is trying to tell us?

I hope you all have a peace-filled day.  I will be thinking about all of you as I attend church and keep a prayer in my heart for those of you who are struggling with something or are lonely.  Just know that I love you all and am grateful for the support and friendship you have given me.  Even if it is just through comments, I adore them all.  :)

Wow, what a great way to teach the children. I'm excited to learn the new song myself. They have been coming out with such beautiful music for the primary the past couple of years.

Personally, I'm a little nervous because I have an appt today with the bishop for a new calling. Eeeek!

Thank you for posting this today! I have started back at church this year after many years with illnesses that kept me away most Sundays...I have always admired the way the song leaders taught in Primary... and spent the first 5 years in THIS church teaching the Sunbeams. What a great message for me especially today! Bless you Sister!

Robyn stay true to who you are in your post. I love hearing about your serving the Lord. I have been teaching preschoolers at my church for over twenty years and always look forward to new ideas. It was not God's plan for me to have my own children, so He Blessed me with more than I could ever have imagined. Many of my preschooler's are parents now and they still give hugs and call me Miss Kathy.
Have a great Sunday with your family.

What a beautiful song! And a great lesson, maybe you should teach the world that same lesson...I think we all need to take time out to show people how much we care by relearning the basics of manners :) I think our world has become too fast-paced for following the basic manners. You're great Robyn!
Have a great day.

May the Lord continue to bless and inspire you in your Primary calling and throughout your life! Much love & hugs- Glora

Oh yes, and I am loving the Faithful Sayings stamps that I got for Christmas. They are going to be perfect for all my religious cards. I have already used the baptism one for a card for my nephew. However, I'm not going to post it until after I give it to him on Saturday. Thanks again for all you do.

I loved reading this post, Robyn. I used to be the primary pianist. It was one of my favorite callings and that was one of my favorite primary songs (along with I Am a Child of God). Sadly, I'm unable to play anymore because of a genetic eye disorder that has caused me to loose some of my vision making it difficult to see the music. I was never able to memorize a song and play. I was always the kid that had to use their music in the recital.

But Sunday's haven't been the same. So 2 yrs later, my other son hits the 6th grade, is in the youth choir and youth group, so I am back involved when needed this year. Life is good again. What a wonderful way to spread His word to the children! One of my favorite *sayings* is on a cross-stitched plaque one of my students gave me years ago---"A Teacher Listens With Her Heart"--your lesson truly exemplifies this. It is obvious to all your fans that you have been blessed with a teacher's Graceful heart. Thanks so much for sharing. If you get a minute, please stop by my blog at http://karelj.blogspot.com I have a new challenge posted (with a great prize), my first ever Design Team Call is up and I'm looking for 4 more bloggers for my *I Have A Dream* blog hop! I'd love to have you join in the fun! Thanks for having such an amazing blog. I love stopping by! karelj

Thank you so much for sharing your story. My husband and I have been inactive for many years but recently have been feeling the prompting strongly to go back. We have tried a couple of times but have had some bad luck with wards that don't really make us feel welcome. Since we move around so much it makes it hard to make real connections. We are in a new place again and hope to get back to church. Wish us luck at finding some real connections that will keep us active in a really awesome ward!

Wow! I love this song! It is so precious! I am going to do this with my kids!! What a great way to teach them that we need to give Jesus our full attention so we can listen to what He is trying to tell us and teach us! I think I will see if I can do a "Kid Church" in my church with this activity. I hope you don't mind me borrowing your idea! ;)
