You did a very good job for your first cakes. I took the Wilton classes several years ago and let me tell you it took me a lot of time to do the cakes pipeing it all. I would bake the cake and base frost it on one evening and pipe all thew designs on the next evening. A secret I will tell you. Take your cake spatula and a glass of warm water and smooth out your base coat frosting. Dip in the water, tap off the esxcess and smooth around the sides first and finish with the top. It will smooth out slick as can be.

Can see you gals had a fun time making the cakes, they turned out beautifully, even your own fondant, I'm impressed. Happy Birthday to your daughter and have a wonderful party.

That is so neat Robyn! All though the pink one came out a little better than the "blue" one.. your daughter will still love it because it came from mommy.. with love! (and I think you're supposed to refrigerate the iced cake for a bit before you fondant it. lol)

Kendra Green said...

Great Job!!! Now I am going to want a Cricut Cake for the 5 cakes a year that I make! LOL...

Veronica said...

Great video Robyn!

I just wanted to pass a little tip along for you since you are just starting in decorating: when you dip into a color to tint either frosting/fondant/gum paste, do not dip back into the color after it has touched product. By double dipping, you run the risk of contaminating your colors and they can spoil. It's best to use toothpicks to pick up globs of color from the bottle to the frosting because they can be used once and thrown away at very little cost to you.

Happy Birthday to your Daughter and thank you again for sharing your passion and love for crafting. :)

Robyn, you did a great job on your cakes. They came out so cute. If you're interested, you should try the beginning Wilton cake decorating class at Joanns. My daughter, who is also 10, took the class and I sat in with her, in case she needed help. We both learned so much. And for a 10 year old she is doing great at decorating cakes. Something to think about with the cricut cake.

Great job. Loved the bright colors. Before you put your batter in the oven take your spatula and move the batter out of the center until it looks like a hole. Then stick you pan in the oven and when the cake is baked you will never have a mound on the top that you have to cut off. It will be flat! The batter slowly fills up the hole as it bakes. Hope you enjoy my trick. I taught cake decorating for years.

You should watch Cake Boss or Ultimate Cake Off for some tips on using fondant (in your spare time, right - ha!). Cricut Cake is a big help to us non-professionals. They make it look so easy, but I bet it's not! I think I've seen them use a steamer to smooth out/set the fondant. With my luck, it would just melt all over. So glad you are willing to experiment & learn on camera! Keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

Robyn, thanks for the video of the cakes and please do more for us who will need the extra help in mastering the Cricut Cake. I am expecting it any day and want to get good at it. To me it does not have to be perfect if it is for you or family. The love in making it is enough.

Thanks for all your help,

Great job Robyn!! You did fabulous for your first cake. It would be so fun to have a Cricut Cake to make my cakes with. Thanks for sharing!!

I make cakes and you did great girl for a beginner. One trick to hide your edges around the bottom is to cut it 1/2 inch longer then with a butter fork just tuck it under your cake. Actual ribbon pinned around it is a nice way to touch up creases and hems too. Your second cake was perfect! I bet they were yummy too! Ok so now how do I win one of those! ;O)
I have used my cricut to cut out patterns then placed them over top the gum paste but iits hard to get in little creases and corners.
YOu are so much fun! Do you ever sleep!? LOL! Your amazing!

That would be a butter "KNIFE" not fork LOL ;O)

cajunprincess said...

Robyn, I don't know if someone has mentioned this before because I didn't read all of the comments, but cake decorating is one of my hobbies. I do work with fondant quite a bit and I just wanted to give you a quick tip. Before you put the fondant on the cake, make sure your cake is level, and then put it in the fridge for an hour. It'll make your lines on the sides much more crisp instead of rounded. Just a thought. You do wonderful work.
